INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – For any longtime racing fan, vintage racing pulls at the heartstrings like no other form of automotive competition. And that’s exactly the draw behind the Brickyard Vintage Racing Invitational, held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway each June. Lucky for us, Ford marketing retiree and super-enthusiast Bill Cook has been a fan for years, and like he does for us at so many other car events across the Midwest, he always brings his trusty camera and provides photos for FordPerformance.com.Red and black vintage mustang race car

Fans agree that the pedigree of this event is elite for both the race cars and the drivers alike. More than 300 of the world’s most exceptional vintage race cars competed in 12 different Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) classes on the 14-turn, 2.429-mile road course at IMS. Cook first visited the SVRA Brickyard Vintage Racing Invitational back in 2015, returned for the 4th annual invitational in 2017, and came back again in 2018. After the COVID pandemic hit, Cook was excited that he’d be able to get back to Indy for the 2022 Brickyard Vintage Racing Invitational / SVRA Indy Speed Tour, which just so happened to have been combined with the SAAC-47 Shelby American Convention over the extended June 16-19 weekend.Yellow mustang on track

“Sometimes I take a few too many pictures at major events,” Cook told us. “The 2022 Brickyard Vintage Racing Invitational /SVRA Indy Speed Tour combined with the SAAC-47 Shelby American Convention was one of those times. It took me a longer than usual to sort through and edit 1,000-plus images. I drove down on Wednesday, June 15, and returned to Michigan on Monday, June 20. I spent four full days at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with the two events overlapping and providing quite a show. The SVRA granted me Photo Media pass access for the weekend, and that made it even better!”Fusion NASCAR vehicle vintage

We’ll give you a Quick Look at Bill’s coverage of SAAC-47 soon, but for now we’ve opted to try and sort through his huge file of photos from the Brickyard Vintage / Indy Speed Tour. We picked out dome of our favorites – including some from the weekend car show – to share with you in the gallery below.Blue and white shelby cobra
