ROMEO, Mich. – Owners of any Shelby Cobra or Cobra replica well-know the joy of driving a classic high-performance sports car with the wind in your face and fresh air mixed with high octane fuel in an open-cockpit. But few get the chance to exercise their Cobras on the actual proving grounds of a major automaker. But that’s exactly what went down with the Great Lakes Cobra Club (GLCC) when they ventured out to Ford’s Michigan Proving Grounds just outside of Romeo, Michigan.
GLCC’s day began with 30-plus vehicles -- including a few Mustangs and other high-performance friends -- cruising out to the proving grounds some 30 miles north of Detroit. Once the greetings and introductions were finished it was time for a quick tour of the track and the different test areas as part of a safety presentation. Once everyone was equipped with the knowledge of how to properly drive within the track rules, it was time to get to it. Nearly all the vehicles that were present had the opportunity to drive their cars at speed on Ford’s oval test track as well as on the proving grounds’ special textured pavement area to test the capability of their prized processions.
