DEARBORN - Spring is just around the corner, so to help car fans shake cabin fever and start thinking about a sun-filled summer of automotive activity, why not head to the beach? Yes, you can bring the whole family to Myrtle Beach, SC, for the March 15-17 weekend while you make the “Run To The Sun 2018 Car Show” at the old Myrtle Square Mall, sponsored by the Pee Dee Street Rodders. This year marks the 30th anniversary of what’s billed as the largest independent car show on the East Coast, with some 3,000 cars and trucks participating. You’ll not only get to share a car-centric weekend with thousands of fellow enthusiasts, but you’ll also be helping several good causes, as proceeds from the show go to charities. To get a glimpse of what it’s like to attend the Run To The Sun show, check out our exclusive coverage of last year’s event here:
Prefer a more traditional Mustang show venue for that weekend? Then saddle up your steed for a road trip to Texas. Ford enthusiasts know the Mustang car show season semi-officially begins when the Mustang Club of America hosts the first of its “National Show” events of the year. For 2018, that means the Lone Star Mustang National March 16-18 in McAllen, Texas, hosted by the South Texas Mustang Club.
There’s a Pony Trail to the Iwo Jima Memorial in nearby Harlingen, Texas, on Friday, plus an MCA judged indoor/outdoor car show at the sprawling McAllen Convention Center complex on Saturday. That night, the club is hosting a banquet complete with door prizes and a guest speaker from Ford Performance. The show wraps up on Sunday afternoon with an awards ceremony. Check out the club links for full details – we hope to see you there!
Are you planning to be in the Detroit area that same weekend instead? Then you should plan to see a special tribute going on at the Automotive Hall of Fame in Dearborn for the late Roy Lunn, known as the “Godfather of the Ford GT40.” During his 40-year automotive career, Lunn designed a prolific array of vehicles including postwar sports cars, radical concept cars and trucks, iconic racing machines, four-wheel-drive SUVs and even military transports. In 2016, he was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame for his contributions to automobile engineering. The Roy Lunn exhibit at the AHoF in Dearborn runs through April 12, 2018. No matter what you decide you’d like to do with your free time, the great thing about owning a performance Ford is that – unlike with buying one of those “appliances” from the other automakers – when you buy a Ford, you buy into an entire enthusiast world! That’s because Ford cars and trucks have the kind of personality and style that forges a personal connection with their owners, who in turn celebrate ownership each year at hundreds of enthusiast events all over the country.
