Touring Galpin Auto Sports Proves to Be a GAS for Visitors

A lineup of Ford GTs on display

VAN NUYS, Calif. – If you’ve ever seen the popular show where they turn a broken down car into a pimped out ride, then you may unknowingly have also heard of Galpin Auto Sports, AKA “GAS.” It was here where they turned many daily drivers into pimped-out street machines. Today, the show is no longer around but Galpin continues to modify just about any Ford you bring them, serving the needs of West Coast Blue Oval enthusiasts for years. From hot rods and muscle cars to resto-mods, supercars and even off-road-ready racers, they build it all. What’s more, alongside their shop facilities, they also have a private collection which houses many historic and unique vehicles.A closeup of the front end of a yellow vehicle on displayTouring the GAS collection is a real treat. One of the vehicles that particularly caught our eye was a 1965 Ford Econoline that was extensively modified for the dragstrip. With the entire drivetrain flipped around and the driver now facing the bed of the truck, this strip-ready beast was built to entertain crowds in the early 70’s while appearing to do a wheelie in reverse!A rear side view of a classic truck on displayA closeup of the interior of a classic Ford truckAlso on display are not only one, but two Lee Iacocca S-197 Mustangs. If you aren’t familiar with the Iacocca 45th Anniversary edition cars, Galpin had partnered with Iacocca to build a limited number of these special Mustangs. They feature a 400-horse supercharged V-8, unique bodywork, bumpers and Iacocca badging, giving them a one-of-a-kind look.A lineup of Ford Mustangs on displayA rear side view of a special grey Mustang on displayA closeup of the Iacocca badge on the MustangsWhen in the Los Angeles area, we highly recommend stopping by Galpin Auto Sports to check out their amazing collection of Ford vehicles. If you can’t make it out that way, check out the gallery below from our own roving photographer, Ford Marketing retiree and super-enthusiast Bill Cook. Bill never leaves home without his camera, so when he flew to Los Angeles a while back to spend time with his daughter and to enjoy some "automotive culture" out on the Left Coast, he snapped these phots while touring the GAS facilities:A side view of a pink vehicle on display with pillows inside
