DEARBORN, Mich. – Shelby fans across the Midwest got a double-dose of mega motoring memories the second weekend in June, when two notable shows took place. For those who couldn’t attend the Shelby American Automobile Club’s annual convention, SAAC 42, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway June 8-9-10, there were two ways to enjoy the Shelby-Ford connection in the Detroit area on that same extended weekend. That’s because the SAAC-Motor City Region held its 42nd Annual “Show & Go” June 11-12. The “Show” part took place on Sunday June 11 at Ford World Headquarters in Dearborn, and the “Go” happened on that following Monday at nearby Waterford Hills Road Race Course. We’ve been there before and can vouch for the great cars you see participating in the show held behind Ford’s “Glass House.”
As a bonus, the Show portion of the SAAC-MCR event this year also played host to the Detroit stop of a half-dozen national Mercury Cougar 50th anniversary events being coordinated by the Cougar Club of America (CCOA). (Yes, the Cougar Club of America is now among the group of Ford Performance enthusiast clubs being promoted on FordPerformance.com.) Some 200 classic Mercury Cougars invaded Dearborn for the Shelby show. Naturally that meant the Cougar Club of America (CCOA) entrants dominated the show with spectacular Cougars on display, including our favorite -- the Shelby Cobra CSX-#2008-based “Cougar II” concept vehicle (a Ford Styling ‘dream car' commissioned in 1962 by then-VP of Ford Design Eugene Bordinat). Longtime Shelby enthusiast and SAAC-MCR club founder Jeff Burgy, as well as the club’s longstanding membership and communications director, Rich Tweedle, were kind enough to walk the show field at Ford WHQ and snap some photos of the cars on display there to share with you in the gallery below – enjoy:
