VINTAGE TRANS-AM RACERS ON-TRACK AT ROAD AMERICA: EYE CANDY FOR FANS

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. – If there’s one thing every enthusiast needs to do in their lifetime it’s to take a trip to Road America to catch vintage racing action while we’re still able to see these cars on the track. That’s the advice from unabashed vintage racing fan and Ford marketing retiree-turned-FordPerformance.com correspondent Bill Cook. Among Cook’s favorite classic vehicles are vintage race cars, so that’s why he and his wife, Mary Lynn, often take a family “vacation” in July to attend the Vintage Trans Am race weekend at Road America. This past summer, Bill set up another racing weekend getaway to see 2021 WeatherTech International Challenge at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

“We took a seven-day ‘road trip, to Road America -- arguably, the finest road-racing facility in the United States,” Cook reported. “We stayed in our VRBO home rental in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, for four full days of vintage car racing in Elkhart Lake, just 20 minutes away. I spent all four days at the track enjoying some 400-plus vintage race cars there, and in doing so I shot 900 pictures.

“While I thoroughly enjoy all of them, my favorites will always be the Historic Trans-Am cars (Mustangs, Camaros, Javelins, Challengers, Barracudas) that raced in the late 1960’s and early ’70’s. The timing coincided with getting my driver’s license and my dad bringing home a ’70 Mustang Boss 302 from his office, which I learned to drive a stick in. I was hooked – which is why I own both a vintage '70 Mustang Boss 302 (for 36 years) and a modern '13 Mustang Boss 302. Enjoy the photos!”

We will, Bill, and we are happy to share some of Cook’s vintage racing eye candy in his photo gallery below:
