DEARBORN -- Multimatic Motorsports’ two Mustang GT4 entries in the MICHELIN Pilot Challenge series event will run Motorcraft “throwback’ paint schemes to honor the Roush Racing IMSA Mustang GTO entries of the mid-1980s, kicking off of IMSA’s 50th anniversary season at Daytona International Speedway on Jan. 25.
NASCAR Xfinity Series drivers Chase Briscoe, Austin Cindric, Ty Majeski and Cole Custer return to Daytona to drive the entries as part of Ford's Driver Development program. Daytona marks the first of four IMSA MICHELIN Pilot Challenge events in 2019 that will feature Ford NASCAR development drivers.
“We saw great success with the NASCAR development driver program last year, so we’re glad to be doing it again for 2019,” said Mark Rushbrook, global director, Ford Performance Motorsports. “Running in the IMSA races has proven to be beneficial to them as race car drivers, and the strong, personal bond that is formed between them has been what we hoped it would be. We expect to have a mixture of the Xfinity drivers and some new faces during 2019 in the Mustang GT4, but overall we couldn’t be more pleased with the program.”
Driver lineups for the Sebring, Mosport and Road Atlanta races will be announced later.
“I’m really excited to get the chance to go back to Daytona and run the Mustang GT4 again for Multimatic," said Chase Briscoe, Ford Performance development driver and Stewart-Haas Racing NASCAR XFINITY Series driver. "Better yet, it’s going to be cool to get back with my NASCAR teammates and be part of the same team again. We had a lot of fun working together, but I think every one of us would say that the experience helped us develop as drivers and it carried over to our NASCAR opportunities. It was a really big learning curve for me when I started there last year, but there is something special about being part of the Rolex 24 weekend. The Mustang GT4 is an incredible race car and we’re going there to win.”
Ford won the manufacturer’s championship in 2018 after Ford Mustang GT4 customer teams posted five victories and 10 podiums.
