Racing in the USA over and above the premier class of Australian motorsport in Supercars, has been a long-time aspiration for Tickford Racing’s star driver Cameron Waters. Come April 5, he will now realise that opportunity driving a Ford F-150s (F-150) in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Event (NCTS) at Martinsville.
With the support of Ford Performance and the longest-tenured NASCAR Truck Series team ThorSport Racing (who are based out of Ohio), Waters will be primed to compete with a leading team that has delivered a massive number of major race wins, 30 pole positions and five Championships.
Post the Melbourne SuperSprint Supercars event held as part of the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, Waters set sail to the USA. Flying out on Tuesday he commented, “We’ve been working away at making this happen for some time and to finally be given the change to race, and with a top operation, is great. I’m not putting too much pressure on myself knowing I will be getting thrown into the deep end without any testing, but hopefully I can adapt reasonably quickly and be competitive. It’s a short oval so I’m sure it will be pretty wild out there.”
“I have to thank Ford Performance and the team at ThorSport for helping make this happen and also my long-time team Tickford Racing, who have always supported my plans to explore new driving opportunities in and around my continued dedication to winning the Supercars Championship with them.”
Tickford Racing owner Rod Nash throws his support behind the opportunity for Waters. “Anything that can provide Cam with further seat time is a bonus. His foray into Sprint Car racing and now a NASCAR Truck event provides a fantastic way to stay sharp and further test his skills. The timing in-between the AGP event and Taupo works for our team and we’ll be wishing him well and watching with huge interest.”
