PONTIAC, MI – A new enthusiast venue in Southeast Michigan called the M1 Concourse has got the Detroit area car community buzzing. It’s a place where car owners can enjoy their passion for all things automotive and motorsports by having their own private “car condo” garage surrounded by other enthusiasts, plus on-site repair and restoration shops, restaurants and even a performance track. Champion Motor Speedway is a 1.5-mile road course that serves as the central feature of the M1 Concourse, which is located right on famed Woodward Avenue in Pontiac, Michigan. Other facilities there include a multi-purpose outdoor event arena with a 2.5 acre skid-pad, and covered event spaces that can accommodate groups of 500 people.
A local buff book, Car and Driver, hosts a monthly “Cars and Coffee” gathering at the new facility, so as you might expect, Ford retiree Bill Cook, our roving car-show photographer, drove up to the M1 Concourse for the end-of-August event to see all the notable Fords among the attendees.
“I heard that Car and Driver's "Cars and Coffee" at the new M1 Concourse car condos and race track was scheduled to run from 8-11 a.m.,” Cook told us. “I arrived way early at 7:20 a.m. in my 2001 Bullitt, and by 7:50 the entire main display area inside the track was full – and they started to place cars around the access roads and ultimately on the racetrack itself! Cars and spectators were still arriving at 10:30 when I decided to head to another car show. Who could guess that this new facility still under construction could draw this many cars? Oh, wait . . . this is Detroit!”
Cook lives in Rochester, and grew up in a Ford family with his Dad working at Ford Division Marketing and Sales. Throughout his own long Ford marketing career, Bill was well-known within the company as an active enthusiast and club member who could always be counted upon to show off photos of the many car shows and events that he attends regularly all across the Midwest. In retirement, it is no different. That’s why we weren’t surprised when Bill sent us a collection of photos he snapped of all the Ford-powered rides that he saw at the M1 Concourse event. He has graciously agreed to share his exclusive photos with all of us here on FordPerformance.com:
